Rusty Screws and Shallow Depths of Field

Both of these pictures are from the same park bench.

The first picture is a hole in the bench seat. I took some pictures from further away then decided I wanted to capture more detail so went closer in.

The second picture I was messing around with the f stops and shutter speeds and came up with this extremely shallow depth of field. It isn’t the best photograph but I think it really shows off how shallow the depth of field will go

Rust and Erosion

I took these a while back when I was doing an erosion project for my art. All these things are in my back garden.

The curved piece of rusty orange metal is a leg stand of an extremely old wheelbarrow. I increased the saturation a tiny amount to slightly lift the colours and create that more vivid orange colour.

The old light was positioned over my back door but the door isn’t there anymore so it is not just on the wall of our house. I got a ladder to get fairly close and tried a few angles, this one is my favourite because of the detail you can see under the lid part and the contrast of the stone against the white metal.

This picture isn’t my favourite and it has been cropped quite a bit but I just like this lock. The variety of colours on this small amount of wood brings the picture more life. I also like that the wood and metal are kind of becoming one over time.

Moss Village

These are the tiny patches of moss that usually grows on the top or in the cracks of stone walls.

I was taking photographs with my marco lens and using a cokin filter of plus 3 I think so it meant I could get really close.

In real life those little stems were no taller than 1cm, if that.

I took absolutely loads of pictures but these are probably the best. A lot of them I was trying different f stops and shutter speeds for the light and changing depth of field.

Fungus

So the title doesn’t sound too appealing but when I saw this tree stump that had been unloved and forgotten I had to photograph it.

It was my first trip out with my new nikkor macro lens (that is actually from the 70s) so I was messing around with the apertures and shutter speeds to see how much detail I could get. And this is what I came up with

Beach

This photo is the one that is used right under the title of my blog but obviously it has been cropped there. The original is darker but I lightened it up originally because it didn’t print well but now I prefer this version.

It was taken in Northern Ireland in Port Rush last summer when I went to visit one of my friends. I don’t often take pictures of beaches because I don’t live near any but it was a great opportunity for me
